Camp Quality
Those of you who have been on the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour in the past, have likely noted our fundraising efforts in support of Camp Quality. We choose to support this organization, not only through financial donations, but several of our members also volunteer their time to help the children involved experience the artist's specialities. Recently Barbara Hotson, Applegate Farm, Watercolour Artist , Kevin Wain of Earthen Vessels Pottery and Ruth Swanson of Sunspots Pottery spent a day at the camp.
Barbara comments: "Kevin, Ruth and I had a wonderful morning working with the kids at Camp Quality. We are humbled in the presence of their enthusiasm and curiosity, resilience and sense of humour. Ruth and Kevin and I had a great time - Ruth has graciously volunteered to take ALL the pottery made, back to her studio to finish and then I’ll take it to the head office of Camp Quality in Toronto for them to pass on to the kids. This is a big commitment in time and materials for Ruth to make - great thanks to Ruth . The kids are so excited to have a hands-on experience with pottery and this is their only opportunity."
We all extend our thanks to the artists who give so generously of their time. If you want to know more about Camp Quality pick up a brochure from one of the studios on the tour or visit their website at www.campquality.com.
Did you know that the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour also awards 3 Arts Scholarships to area highschools, annually? Learn more here. |

Larry A. Cluchey -
Wood Turning
The September/October 2011 issue of FineWoodworking Magazine will include an article by Larry entitled "Extra Clamping Pressure for Dovetail Joints". The acceptance of this article with its esoteric title, though mysterious to most of us, indicates that this prestigious publication recognizes Larry's knowledge as a brilliant craftman and artist. This is the second time the magazine has accepted an item of his. A Tools and Shops issue a few years ago published a photograph of his handmade "cutting gauges"

Wes Bates Gallery
Wesley recently completed his first multi-colour wood engraving. It was commissioned for a book by Richard Taylor (once the poet laureate of Kentucky) about John James Audubon, published by Larkspur Press in Monterey in Kentucky. Wesley comments "I don't know why it took me so long to make a multi colour engraving but it was fun and I plan to do more.
Wesley had a Grand Re-opening of West Meadow Press recently with a much larger turn out than he had anticipated. His gallery and print shop in Clifford are now open Thursday through Monday 11 am to 5 pm except on Sundays when hours are Noon to 5 pm

Elsa Mann
Night & Day Studio
Over the last year, Elsa Mann of Night and Day Studio, has been exploring the world of Architectural Sculpture. After studying with a world renowned sculptor last summer, she tackled her first large scale piece early in 2011. Countless hours of design, sculpting, glazing, firing and assembly went in to making this 5 ft high fountain. Large leaves stretch across each side and water is pumped through the hollow sculpture, quietly cascading over the leaves. One of the best attributes of this method of sculpting is that it can winter outdoors, which makes it a great option for garden sculpture and outdoor signs.
Elsa will be demonstrating this sculpting technique during the weekend of the studio tour.
